Allowing a variable to be blank if not evaluated

If a variable expression in a comment is not able to be evaluated for some reason, then by default the expression appears as *** NOT EVALUATED ***.

You can, however, specify that such an expression should simply appear as a blank for that case. Simply tick the “Allow blanks” check box in the Expression Editor, as shown in the example below:
